Movie Overview Boy Essay Example For Students
Film Overview Boy Essay The movie Boy, coordinated by Taika Waititi, is an exceptionally fascinating film made in New Zealand. It follows the account of the fundamental character, Boy, a multi year old kid who at long last gets an opportunity to know his dad, who has come back to discover a pack of cash he covered years prior. There were a few significant occasions in this film, yet the fundamental one was when Boy gets high on maryjane, and understands that Alamein, his dad was never there for him or his mom. Through this occasion, Boyââ¬â¢s perspective on his dad changes in a negative way, and Boy additionally starts to regard Rocky, his sibling and discovers obligation and development inside himself. The executive, Waititi, utilizes a few visual and oral methods, for example, exchange, flashbacks, non-diegetic sound and perspective shots to show Boyââ¬â¢s change in mentality towards his dad. At the point when Boy gets high on pot and sits on the extension, he sees flashbacks of when his mom was pregnant, and when she kicked the bucket. From these flashbacks, he understood his dad was never there, he wasnââ¬â¢t there when his mom was pregnant or when she passed on. It was now that Boy understood reality with regards to his dad (Alamein) and that he had made bogus pictures of Alamein every one of these years. This is caught superbly by the chief, Waititi, who utilizes the perspective shot successfully to catch Boy falling in reverse from the scaffold through Boyââ¬â¢s eyes, and gave us how he felt at that point. It gave us that Boyââ¬â¢s world flipped around, truly, as he discovered reality with regards to Alamein. This acknowledgment of his fatherââ¬â¢s reality prompts an upheaval of outrage. Waititiââ¬â¢s utilization of exchange shows this well as Boy says ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not at all like you! â⬠in fierceness to Alamein. This shows he has at long last surrendered to the way that his dad isnââ¬â¢t what he thought, and as a general rule, Alamein isn't somebody to turn upward to. This occasion had both positive and negative consequences for Boy. Constructive on the grounds that Boyââ¬â¢s at long last observed the genuine individual his dad was, and discovered reality with regards to him. Negative in light of the fact that after each one of those long periods of pictures Boy made in his mind of his dad, to discover they were all bogus probably been amazingly difficult to deal with for a multi year old. Mental harm would have enormously influenced kid, he wouldââ¬â¢ve presumably always been unable to confide in another man completely once more. This occasion likewise in the long run prompted another beneficial outcome on Boy as he took on a job of obligation and indicated development past his years. After the acknowledgment was made about his dad, Boy met the challenge at hand and cared for his cousins and sibling as opposed to depending on Alamein. This could be seen when Boy woke up the day after his showdown with Alamein, and Boy fired tidying up the house without anyone else and making his family food, stepping up to the plate. This demonstrated how he in a flash took on a huge job of obligation, without griping. This was incredibly positive as this is a significant worth that he will likely carry on into what's to come. Waititi utilization of non-diegetic sounds was sharp in this scene, as it set the pace in a predicament; where music began in a moderate tone and developed its way to a speedier pace as kid started cleaning, which recommends Boy and his family donââ¬â¢t need their imprudent dad so as to live their lives. Waititi likewise utilized this music to show that Boy had developed into and free individual who assumed liability for his family and manufactured a more grounded care for them. Boyââ¬â¢s development could be seen again when Boy lied about the whereabouts of Alamein to Rocky when Alamein had vanished after his encounter with Boy. Kid likewise didnââ¬â¢t inform Rocky regarding the way that Alamein was never there for them two, not in any event, when their mom kicked the bucket. This could be seen through Waititiââ¬â¢s utilization of discourse, ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s father? â⬠asked Rocky, ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s in Japan preparing to be a samuraiâ⬠answered Boy. .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 , .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .postImageUrl , .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .focused content region { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 , .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3:hover , .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3:visited , .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3:active { border:0!important; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; obscurity: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3:active , .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3:hover { mistiness: 1; change: murkiness 250ms; webkit-progress: haziness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relative; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: striking; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content embellishment: underline; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; outskirt range: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: intense; line-stature: 26px; moz-outskirt sweep: 3px; content adjust: focus; content design: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .uc c4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3 .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .ucc4e43842dde1fb5c76aa18ad343bfe3:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: The play content and the film The Crucible EssayThis demonstrated that the occasion positively affected Boy, as he needed to shield Rocky from the individual his dad truly is, which was very mindful and developed for his sake. It additionally indicated that his relationship with Rocky had fortified, and will keep on reinforcing into the future, which can be viewed as exceptionally positive. In general, I believe that the movie ââ¬ËBoyââ¬â¢ coordinated by Taika Waititi was an entirely charming film to watch. This film had numerous significant occasions, yet the headliner was Boyââ¬â¢s acknowledgment of his da d, and how he was never there for Boy and Rocky. This Event prompted Boy seeing his dad distinctively in a negative way, and it likewise prompted Boy assuming greater liability for his family; in this way it was significant with regards to this film. It had both positive and negative impacts on Boy. Positive since kid saw his relationship with Alamein was based on lies, and due to Boyââ¬â¢s freshly discovered depiction of development and duties past his years. In any case, Boy was likewise impact adversely in light of the fact that after all the long stretches of deference towards his dad, the truth would have been very hard for the multi year old.

Green Bay
Green Bay Green Bay, city (1990 pop. 96,466), seat of Brown co., NE Wis., at the mouth of the Fox River on Green Bay; inc. 1854. An important Great Lakes harbor, Green Bay is a port of entry, with heavy shipping and a large wholesale and jobbing trade. Its industries include papermaking, food and dairy processing, meatpacking, and auto part manufacture. Jean Nicolet established a trading post on the site of Green Bay in 1634; many notable French explorers and missionaries followed. The permanent settlement, the oldest in the state, dates from 1701. The key to the Fox-Wisconsin water route and thus an entry to the Midwest, Green Bay became a fur-trading center and was occupied successively by the French (1717), the British (1761), and the Americans (1816). With the settlement of the Old Northwest after the War of 1812 and the decline of the fur trade, Green Bay became the trade center of a lumber and farm area. Of interest are the National Railroad Museum and many historical buildings, in cluding the Tank Cottage (1776). A branch of the Univ. of Wisconsin and a technical college are in the city, which is also the home of the Green Bay Packers professional football team. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. Mark Twain Quotes on Education and Schooling
The genius writer and father of American literature,Ã Mark Twain, was not educated beyond elementary school. His expresses cynicism toward the mediocre education system of this time in his quotes about education. He believed that schooling was different from education and learning. He warns us of the hazards of following the education system with blind faith. In Praise of Learning and Training Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education. The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man that can not read them. There is nothing training cannot do. Nothing is above its reach. It can turn bad morals to good; it can destroy bad principles and recreate good ones; it can lift men to angel ship. Every time you stop a school, you will have to build a jail. What you gain at one end you lose at the other. Its like feeding a dog on his own tail. It wont fatten the dog. It is noble to teach oneself, but still nobler to teach others - and less trouble. A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. Thousands of geniuses live and die undiscovered - either by themselves or by others. Learning softeneth the heart and breedeth gentleness and charity. Criticism of Schooling Education consists mainly of what we have unlearned. We have not the reverent feeling for the rainbow that a savage has because we know how it is made. We have lost as much as we gained by prying into that matter. God made the Idiot for practice, and then He made the School Board. Just the omission of Jane Austens books alone would make a fairly good library out of a library that hadnt a book in it. I never let my schooling interfere with my education. Everything has its limit - iron ore cannot be educated into gold. All schools, all colleges, have two great functions: to confer, and to conceal valuable knowledge. Mark Twain Quips on Specific Subjects The very ink with which all history is written is merely fluid prejudice. I dont give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way. There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Facts are stubborn, but statistics are more pliable. Classic. A book which people praise and dont read. I was gratified to be able to answer promptly, and I did. I said I didnt know. Why shouldnt truth be stranger than fiction? Fiction, after all, has to make sense. We could use up two Eternities in learning all that is to be learned about our own world and the thousands of nations that have arisen and flourished and vanished from it. Mathematics alone would occupy me eight million years. Many public-school children seem to know only two dates - 1492 and 4th of July, and as a rule, they dont know what happened on either occasion.

Essay about Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism - 2493 Words
I strongly believe that every person who reads a book, listens to the radio, or watches a program on television will make their own assumptions. I know I do. Most of us will ask, ââ¬Å"Why did the main character make that decision?â⬠Or ââ¬Å"What were they thinking?â⬠Could it be that the author of the story is protruding their own subconscious thoughts and beliefs through their characters? Many novels and other pieces of literature, contain a main character that has difficulty finding happiness and solutions to their problems. In Siddhartha, the main character Siddhartha, is born into his fathers social class but finds himself not pleased with his religion nor happiness, so he goes on a journey hoping to find comfort within himself. Like Siddhartha the main character in the Razors Edge, Larry Darnell questions his religion, and everyday decisions. We will write a custom essay sample on Siddhartha or any similar topic only for you Order Now Both Larry Darnell and Siddhartha break off from their original society to go on expeditions in hope to find answers to their unanswered concerns, and to find enlightenment. Both characters willingly give up things in order to reach their goal. Siddhartha leaves his father and his fatherââ¬â¢s power in their community.â⬠¯ Siddharthaââ¬â¢s father, a Brahmin leader, has much power which makes him able to provide for Siddhartha well.â⬠¯ Siddhartha does not like the ways his father is living and is dissatisfied with his fatherââ¬â¢s religious beliefs because he sees that his father and his followers are not reaching enlightenment so he feels that it would not make sense to follow a method that obviously is not working.â⬠¯ He and his best friend, Govinda, decide to commence on a journey to find a way of life that is satisfying to them. Making the decision to leave his family and home must have been a very hard choice to make for such a young man to make. Later on in the book, Siddhartha leaves even more of his loved ones behind in his exploration for enlightenment. à He departs from his friend Govinda when Govinda feels that he is content with the samanas and their teachings and Siddhartha feels that he must experience life for his own in order to find inner happiness. à Govinda is Siddharthaââ¬â¢s best friend and was with him through the toughest of times. Siddhartha loves Govinda, but knows that it was in the best interest of both of them to part ways. Additionally, Siddhartha feels the need to let his only child, whom he loves dearly, to go off on his own and experience lifeââ¬â¢s qualities for himself just like how Siddhartha did during his own childhood. Although he knows it is the right thing to do, Siddhartha feels a natural love towards his newly discovered son and is dreadfully heartbroken by his absence. à Likewise, Larry Darrell willingly gives up a lot of things for his hunt towards world knowledge and inner happiness. Larry gives up Isabel, the woman heââ¬â¢s known and loved since he was a child with no parents, because she wanted a life of luxury and wealth. à Larry did not want that because he wanted to live a modest life where he lives off of the rush that comes with learning and living freely and not trapped in a life full of materialism and capital gain. à He believes that money is not necessary and even goes to the extent of declining a lavish job offer from his best friendââ¬â¢s father. He would have been one of Mr. Maturinââ¬â¢s stock brokers and he would have been practically guaranteed huge sums of money and would have been able to support Isabel to the standard of living that she is used to. à Also, Larry gives up his friend Yosti to focus on his goal. à He and Yosti become great friends when they room together at the mines and go looking for farm work together. à Larry feels that it is his time to move on and abandons Yosti at a farm. à Though in the end it paid off, both characters willingly gave up things in order to reach enlightenment. Both characters gain knowledge while on their quest. à Siddhartha learns a lot from his young son. His son taught him about the true meaning of love. Siddhartha started out on his journey with the thought that you do not need to love everything because some things just are not lovable. His son taught him that you must love everything and yourself to respect the world and everything inside of it. à Siddhartha feels a natural love toward his son and was utterly heartbroken when the time came when he had to let his son go. His son is not the only person that affected him, for the river also had quite an impact on Siddhartha. à The river showed him that time does not really exist and that everything always comes back around. Siddhartha is relieved by this idea because the stresses that time brings are now suddenly lifted off from him. à The idea that everything comes back around is paralleled to Siddharthaââ¬â¢s life because he left his father to go and explore life on his own and now his own son does the same. Siddhartha also learns the difference between knowledge and wisdom and the difference between seeking and finding. à He comes to the conclusion at the end of the novel that ââ¬Å"Knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdomâ⬠(Hesse 142) and that ââ¬Å"Seeking means: to have a goal; but finding means: to be free, to be receptive, to have no goalâ⬠(Hesse 140). à Correspondingly, Larry is affected by people as well. He meets a yogi and brings him questions about god and evil. The yogi teaches him about the Hindu religion and explains to Larry that ââ¬Å"evil is as a direct a manifestation of the divine as the goodâ⬠(Maugham 114). à Larry is greatly affected by the yogi and takes the information that the yogi shared with him for the rest of his journey. He is also influenced by reading books. He gains worldly knowledge from reading and uses it to his advantage. à He reads about all kinds of philosophies and ideas that bring him to question religion and God. à Larry also learns from experiences. à He decides to leave his friends in Chicago and live in Paris to simply clear his mind and get his thoughts straight. à He also goes to work in a coal mine, a job of which many people would despise having, just to see what itââ¬â¢s like to have some manual labor under his belt. à Most ââ¬Å"people would think [he is] crazyâ⬠(Maugham 46) for doing unnecessary hard labor like Larry does, but that doesnââ¬â¢t seem to bother him. à He later went on a 5 year expedition starting in a monastery in Germany and ending with a Hindu yogi in India where he lived ââ¬Å"with calmness, forbearance, compassion, selflessness, and continenceâ⬠(Maugham 279). This makes him decide to ditch Christianity and makes him very open to Hindu beliefs. à Larry also learns a lot from his time served in World War I. à He was a pilot and him and his best friend, Patsy, got into a dogfight in the air and Patsy literally took a bullet for Larry and died. This event is truly when Larry begins to question religion and God. à Overall, Larry and Siddhartha are greatly influenced by others while going through his journey and learn a lot along the way. Siddhartha and Larry have great effects on other people on their path to enlightenment. à They never seem to shy away from sharing their knowledge with those who will listen. Siddhartha influences his longtime friend Govinda by explaining to him all that he has learned on his voyage. He tells Govinda the meaning and importance of love, seeking and wisdom. When Siddhartha goes in depth about love he describes how a person must love themselves in order to be grateful for anything else that exists in the world. Siddhartha picks up a rock acknowledging how he loves this rock: ââ¬Å"it is a stone, because today and now it appears to me a stone. I see value and meaning in each of its fine mark ings and cavities in the yellow in the gray in the hardness and the sound of itâ⬠(Hesse 145). à This lesson has a huge impact for Govinda, and he ââ¬Å"bow[es] low. Incontrollable tears trickl[e] down his old faceâ⬠(Hesse 151). à Govinda is truly inspired by the teachings and his knowledge about the world. Govinda is just one of the people that he influenced. Siddhartha has an effect on his friend Kamala. Kamala is a very materialistic person and Siddhartha opens her eyes to the idea that material goods are not the most important things in life. She is inspired by this thought and takes a page from his book to further her learning. à She then becomes pregnant with Siddharthaââ¬â¢s son and raises him under Buddhist beliefs and eventually dies in an attempt to travel to meet Buddha himself. à In general, Siddhartha has a positive effect on people that he has encountered with along his journey. Equally, Larry has positive effects on several people along his journey. Larry affects Isabel when she sabotages her own plan to make Larry think that she was pregnant. She thinks of him as being too innocent and sweet to do anything menacing to him. He also makes her question her marriage with Gray because she still loves Larry. à Furthermore, Larry makes a strong attempt to change Sophie. à After her husband and childââ¬â¢s sudden death, Sophie turns to drugs and alcohol to ease her pain. Larry puts Sophieââ¬â¢s problems on his back and helps rehabilitate her and even asked for her hand in marriage. à She accepts his proposal but then relapses and goes back to her bad habits. Although he ultimately failed, Larry still put in a great effort in helping Sophie. à Larry also affects Suzanne by taking her off of the streets and taking care of her when she needed it the most. à Larry finds her and feels that he is obligated to help her so he briefly gives her and her young daughter a home to live in, money and accompanies them through all of this to ensure that they are all right. Larry gives Suzanne hope and the two of them become very close, close enough that Larry tells her about his scarring experiences in World War I. Towards the end of their relationship they have sex and then the next morning Larry decides that Suzanne is ready to get back on her feet and leaves her with money and good people to surround herself with. He leaves her with a pleasing life which she greatly appreciates. As a whole, Larry and Siddhartha are influential in many peopleââ¬â¢s lives and truly become teachers. People reach enlightenment in different ways. à Siddhartha reaches enlightenment by experiencing all aspects of life and being very open minded so he is not a seeker and is a finder. à Larry Darrell reaches enlightenment by reading, loafing, helping others, questioning religion, and keeping his personal space. à Both characters learn, teach, and sacrifice during their journey towards happiness and both characters evidently reach their goal in the end. The Effective Methods of Collecting Data in the Science Field
In the science field, scientists collect data all the time to make analysis and conclusions in the various fields. In the medical field for example, researchers use research data to find out about the type of medication they should administer. Therefore, it is very important for scientist to use effective methods of collecting data.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Effective Methods of Collecting Data in the Science Field specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Since all subjects cannot be studied, scientists select a sample of subject from a group of interest to conduct their studies. The results from the sample selected, are assumed to represent the characteristics of the whole group. Samples are usually collected in a random manner to at least ensure every aspect of the group is captured. Collecting just a sample of subject makes sense in some circumstances. For example, if a researcher is interested in finding ou t the effect of an advertisement on T.V in a certain town, it will be tedious and extremely expensive to study every individual in the town. The best thing to do is to randomly pick a few people from the population and study them. In many cases, the result will reflect the effect on the general population of the town. However, choosing subjects by random method might not actually be random. Unknowingly, the researcher might pick subjects who do not represent the group of interest. For example, a medical team in USA might be interested in finding out the side effects of a certain treatment drug they are developing. It is apparent that the team will pick about 1000 random individuals of different ages throughout the country. Also, they probably will ensure that both genders are well represented. Let us say the result will indicate that 90% of them vomited. In many ways, these results are inconclusive. First of all, only a thousand subjects were examined and probably the drug will be u sed by over a million patients throughout the world. Factors that will affect the side effects of this drug will most likely depend on medical background, heredity and even geographical location. Out of the thousand picked, there is a big chance that all these factors were not taken into account or reflected on the results. It would not be big surprise if only 7% of the patients administered with the drug vomited. Probably, the largest percentage of the patients would exhibit far much worse side effects like death. This will obviously be a catastrophic mistake made by the medical team. Other than the method having a huge magnitude of error, the randomized experiments could have expensive methods of repair or render subjects to lethal circumstances (HECKARD, 2006).Advertising Looking for essay on math statistics? Perhaps one of the most accurate methods of sampling, especially one involving treatment methods with a placebo effect, is the snowball technique. In this method, information is collected from a minute pool that has the desired characteristics. The people in this group are then asked to identify other people who posses similar desired characteristics. The researcher then moves on to the referred group and does the same thing until he collects enough data to make a conclusive report or, until there are no changes in the data. In this method, the researcher will be able to include crucial subjects that would have otherwise been left out. Since this method deals with specific type of group, the results are much more conclusive than most of the sampling methods present. Other than its accuracy, this method is cheap and has minimal damage risk to the subjects (Sharon, 2009). Works Cited HECKARD. (2006). Statistical Ideas and Methods. New York: Thomson . Sharon, L. L. Peak flow measurement Essays
Peak flow measurement Essays Peak flow measurement Essay Peak flow measurement Essay There are many measurements available to monitor changes in breathing capacity. One of the simplest measurements used by doctors and patients would be the peak flow meter. A peak flow meter is a portable instrument that detects minute decreases in air flow, used by people with asthma to monitor small changes in breathing capacity1. The peak flow meter has two parts, a mouth piece and a meter measured in litres per minute (L/min). This type of measurement is used for diagnosis and self-management; it is very cheap and easy to manage by the patient. But unfortunately it is not very accurate as the meter only measures in every 10 L/min. There will be a greater inaccuracy to smokers since they have greater damage in there bronchioles. A peak flow meter will help the patient to tell what is going on in his airways rather than guessing the way a patient feels, also it will help whether the patient needs to change his treatment. Asthma is a medical condition which makes breathing difficult by causing by causing the air passages to become narrow or blocked2. The tightness of the air ways can cause one or more of the following symptoms: * Wheezing * Coughing * Shortness of breath * Chest tightness The narrowing of air passages is caused by airway inflammation (airways in lungs become red, swollen and narrow). Unfortunately the cause of asthma is not known, but there are factors which play a part in asthma. These include: * Genetic factors- Inheritance; * Environmental factors- Inhaling house dust mites, exposure to tobacco smoke, sensitive to animals, pollens, moulds and dusts; * Dietary changes- Higher salt intake, a lack of fresh oily fish etc. * Lack of exercise. There are few medicines used by asthmatic patients which help them when they are in extreme conditions and also when their vital capacity lower than before. The two main ones are bronchodilator is and inhaler which is blue in colour and is used for reversibility test. A bronchodilator widens the air passages of the lungs and eases breathing by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle3. The second medicine is prednisolone which is a synthetic steroid and is used in various compounds as an anti-inflammatory4. These two medicines are used respectively when the peak flow of a patient is lower than before. Therefore the reversibility testis used first. If this medicine does not breathing capacity to better, the patient will then need to use the steroid challenge medicine. Method When taking a peak flow reading I should: 1. Check the pointer is at zero and stand in a comfortable, upright position. 2. Hold the peak flow meter level and keep fingers away from the pointer. 3. Firstly take deep breath and then close lips firmly around the mouth piece. After that blow very hard onto the mouth piece. 4. Look at the point and record the reading. 5. Reset the pointer back to zero. Repeat this method three times and record the highest readings. Results My three peak flow results are 500 L/min, 520 L/min and 500 L/min. I have produced a histogram to show the distribution of the PEF of the whole class for males and females: PEF (L/min) frequency 300?Y350 1 350?Y400 4 400?Y450 5 450?Y500 2 PEF (L/min) frequency 450?X500 1 500?X550 3 550?X600 3 600?X650 3 650?X700 4 Average mean for males: 14/5 = 2.8 Average mean for females: 12/4 = 3 Percentage predicted for my results: 520/585 *100 = 88.9% Discussion My experimental procedure produced clear results although recording readings wasnt very accurate due to the inaccuracy of the meter. My own PEF results showed that it was lower than my predicted result, this is because I have asthma! But from my calculations measurements, I cannot prove that I have asthmas my percentage predicted result is greater than 85%. Therefore other measurements need to be used to help the detection of asthma. Comparing the histogram graphs for females and males it is clear that the males lowest peak flow value is greater than the females lowest peak flow value. Also the male distribution is negatively skewed and the female distribution is approximately symmetrical. This indicates in the male distribution that the PEF of most students lie to the right side of the histogram. This means that majority of males in the class are healthy, fit, have large lungs and do not have asthma. The female graph shows that the majority of students are in the range of 350?Y;450 L/min, this indicates that the female lungs are smaller than males lungs and therefore females vital capacity is lower. The average value for males is 2.8 which indicates that the average PEF value lies between 500?X;550, while the females average value is 3 therefore indicating that the average PEF value lies between 350?Y;400. This clearly shows that the average PEF value for males is greater than females. This is understandable, since on average males have larger diameter around the chest; also in the class the males are larger in size than females. Conclusion In general peak flow meter reading will vary according to age, height, gender and also it varies from person to person, as seen from the results, it is difficult to say exactly what a persons best peak flow should be. I conclude from results that males in my group have greater vital capacity than females. I was also aware that in my group, ages do vary from someone who is 30yrs and another who is 18yrs. This is one of the reasons why the histogram graph has large distribution between both genders. I believe, from what I was given, that the results I obtained are fairly accurate and it helps professionals to conclude whether a patient has air inflammation or not. Also helps the doctor to give the right treatments to the

Economic Deflation and How to Prevent It
Economic Deflation and How to Prevent It Is the problem that there is more to printing money than printing money? Is, in fact, the way printed money gets into circulation, that the Fed buys bonds, and thus gets money into the economy? What is the logical rabbit trail that leads to inflation from printing money? Would solving deflation this way work with todays low-interest rates? Why or why not? Deflation has been a hot topic since about 2001 and the fear of deflation does not look like it will subside anytime soon. What Is Deflation? This article on why money has value explains that inflation occurs when money becomes relatively less valuable than goods. Then deflation is simply the opposite, that over time money is becoming relatively more valuable than the other goods in the economy. Following the logic of that article, deflation can occur because of a combination of four factors: The supply of money goes down. The supply of other goods goes up.Demand for money goes up.Demand for other goods goes down. Before we decide that the Fed should increase the money supply, we have to determine how much of a problem deflation really is and how the Fed can influence the money supply. First, well look at the problems caused by deflation. Most economists agree that deflation is both a disease and a symptom of other problems in the economy. In Deflation: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Don Luskin at Capitalism Magazine examines James Paulsens differentiation of good deflation and bad deflation. Paulsens definitions are clearly looking at deflation as a symptom of other changes in the economy. He describes good deflation as occurring when businesses are able to constantly produce goods at lower and lower prices due to cost-cutting initiatives and efficiency gains. This is simply factor 2 The supply of other goods goes up on our list of the four factors which cause deflation. Paulsen refers to this as good deflation since it allows GDP growth to remain strong, profit growth to surge and unemployment to fall without inflationary consequence. Bad deflation is a more difficult concept to define. Paulsen simply states that bad deflation has emerged because even though selling price inflation is still trending lower, corporations can no longer keep up with cost reductions and/or efficiency gains. Both Luskin and I have difficulty with that answer, as it seems like half an explanation. Luskin concludes that bad deflation is actually caused by the revaluation of a countrys monetary unit of account by that countrys central bank. In essence, this is really factor 1 The supply of money goes down from our list. So bad deflation is caused by a relative decline in the money supply and good deflation is caused by a relative increase in the supply of goods. These definitions are inherently flawed because deflation is caused by relative changes. If the supply of goods in a year increases by 10% and the supply of money in that year increases by 3% causing deflation, is this good deflation or bad deflation? Since the supply of goods has increased, we have good deflation, but since the central bank hasnt increased the money supply fast enough we should also have bad deflation. Asking whether goods or money caused deflation is like asking When you clap your hands, is the left hand or the right hand responsible for the sound?. Saying that goods grew too fast or money grew too slowly is inherently saying the same thing since were comparing goods to money, so good deflation and bad deflation are terms that probably should be retired. Looking at deflation as a disease tends to get more agreement among economists. Luskin says that the true problem with deflation is that it causes problems in business relationships: If you are a borrower, you are contractually committed to making loan payments that represent more and more purchasing power - while at the same time the asset you bought with the loan to begin with is declining in nominal price. If you are a lender, chances are that your borrower will default on your loan to him under such conditions. Colin Asher, an economist at Nomura Securities, told Radio Free Europe that the problem with deflation is that in deflation [theres] a declining spiral. Businesses make less profits so they cut back [on] employment. People feel less like spending money. Businesses then dont make any profits and everything works itself into a declining spiral. Deflation also has a psychological element as it becomes rooted in peoples psychologies and becomes self-perpetuating. Consumers are discouraged from buying expensive items like automobiles or homes because they know those things will be cheaper in the future. Mark Gongloff at CNN Money agrees with these opinions. Gongloff explains that when prices fall simply because people have no desire to buy - leading to a vicious cycle of consumers postponing spending because they believe prices will fall further - then businesses cant make a profit or pay off their debts, leading them to cut production and workers, leading to lower demand for goods, which leads to even lower prices. While I havent polled every economist who has written an article on deflation this should give you a good idea of what the general consensus on the subject. A psychological factor that has been overlooked is how many workers look at their wages in nominal terms. The problem with deflation is that the forces causing prices in general to drop should cause wages to drop as well. Wages, however, tend to be rather sticky in the downward direction. If prices rise 3% and you give your employees a 3% raise, theyre roughly as well off as they were before. This is equivalent to the situation where prices drop 2% and you cut the pay of your employees by 2%. However, if employees are looking at their wages in nominal terms, theyll be much happier with a 3% raise than a 2% pay cut. A low level of inflation makes it easier to adjust wages in an industry whereas deflation causes rigidities in the labor market. These rigidities lead to an inefficient level of labor usage and slower economic growth. Now weve seen some of the reasons why deflation is undesirable, we must ask ourselves: What can be done about deflation? Of the four factors listed, the easiest one to control is number 1 The supply of money. By increasing the money supply, we can cause the inflation rate to rise, so we can avoid deflation. In order to understand how this works, we first need a definition of the money supply. The money supply is more than just the dollar bills in your wallet and the coins in your pocket. Economist Anna J. Schwartz defines the money supply as follows: The U.S. money supply comprises currency - dollar bills and coins issues by the Federal Reserve System and the Treasury - and various kinds of deposits held by the public at commercial banks and other depository institutions such as savings and loans and credit unions. There are three broad measures economists use when looking at the money supply: M1, a narrow measure of moneys function as a medium of exchange; M2, a broader measure that also reflects moneys function as a store of value; and M3, a still broader measure that covers items that many regard as close substitutes of money. How the Money Rupple Is Influenced The Federal Reserve has several options at its disposal in order to influence the money supply and thereby raise or lower the inflation rate. The most common way the Federal Reserve changes the inflation rate is by changing the interest rate. The Fed influences interest rates causes the supply of money to change. Suppose the Fed wishes to lower the interest rate. It can do this by buying government securities in exchange for money. By buying up securities on the market, the supply of those securities goes down. This causes the price of those securities to go up and the interest rate to decline. The relationship between the price of a security and interest rates is explained on the third page of my article The Dividend Tax Cut and Interest Rates. When the Fed wants to lower interest rates, it buys a security, and by doing so it injects money into the system because it gives the holder of the bond money in exchange for that security. So the Federal Reserve can increase the money supply by lowering interest rates through buying securities and decrease the money supply by raising the interest rates by selling securities. Influencing interest rates is a commonly used method of reducing inflation or avoiding deflation. Gongloff at CNN Money cites a Federal Reserve study that says Japans deflation could have been dodged, for example, if the Bank of Japan (BOJ) had only cut interest rates by 2 more percentage points between 1991 and 1995. Colin Asher points out that sometimes that if interest rates are too low, this method of controlling deflation is no longer an option, as currently in Japan where interest rates are practically zero. Changing interest rates in some circumstances is an effective way of controlling deflation through controlling the money supply. We finally get to the original question: Is the problem that there is more to printing money than printing money? Is, in fact, the way printed money gets into circulation, that the Fed buys bonds, and thus gets money into the economy?. Thats precisely what happens. The money the Fed gets to buy government securities has to come from somewhere. Generally, it is just created in order for the Fed to carry out its open market operations. So in most instances, when economists talk about printing more money and the Fed lowering interest rates theyre talking about the same thing. If interest rates are already zero, as in Japan, there is little room to lower them further, so using this policy to fight deflation will not work well. Fortunately, interest rates in the U.S. have not yet reached the lows of those in Japan. Next week well look at seldom used ways of influencing the money supply that the United States may want to consider in order to fight deflation. Noise Pollution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Noise Pollution - Essay Example General Characteristics of sound in relation to Noise pollution Sound is made up of longitudinal waves that travel through air and cause certain materials to vibrate and create sound. The common characteristics of sound are intensity, frequency, amplitude and velocity. Sound cannot travel in outer space because it is a vacuum. (Ron Kurtus, 2009) According to Kurtus atoms and molecules that float in outer space are too far apart to actually cause any vibration or sound. A loud explosion in outer space would hardly be heard because of the vacuum. Unlike electromagnetic waves that easily travel through space through electrical and magnetic fields, sound waves are caused due to vibration of matter. (Ron Kurtus, 2009) Sound intensity in relation to Noise Pollution The intensity of sound varies from human to human due to varying hearing sensitivity and therefore cannot be generalized. Sounds which could be normal for some could be harsh for others. Sound frequencies ranging between 1000 Hz and 5000 Hz seem most sensitive to the human ear. However, a normal human ear with the right hearing ability has the lowest threshold of approximately 4000 Hz for comfortable hearing. When sound intensity goes beyond this threshold it tends to impact on the ear causing damage. Such intense sounds include loud explosions, blasts, crashes and noise from heavy machinery etc. Prolonged exposure to such intensity of sounds is liable to lead to permanent damage. Sound intensity is described as the average rate of sound energy flow across a perpendicular surface in the line of propagation. Sound intensity is measured by special units, namely, bel and decibel which are logarithmic. If there is an increase of 1 bel, the intensity of the sound increases ten fold. An increase of 1 dB increases the intensity by approximately 25% and the change in audibility can hardly be detected. The threshold for human hearing is 0 dB sound intensity. The intensity of sound decreases as distance is increased . (www.physicsclassroom.com) Frequency of Noise Pollution The frequency of noise pollution is as important as its intensity and therefore prolonged or frequent exposure to noise is another contributing factor that lowers an individualââ¬â¢s quality of life. The intensity of sound that exceeds above 90dB or even lesser but recurs repeatedly over long periods of time either at work or ones own home, is sure to cause damage to the ear. Damage leads to a deterioration in audibility and could progress into permanent loss of hearing if not checked in time. Therefore, it is advisable to use hearing protectors especially when exposed to noisy environments on a regular basis. Noise pollution in relation to the quality of life Noise pollution is a major contributing factor to discomfort and stress in human beings. In fact it is a crucial threat to an individualââ¬â¢s quality of life especially for those who work in factories and industries with heavy machinery that creates a lot of soun d. In this contemporary age, the latest technology brought about by industrialization poses a major threat to human beings as well as causing ecological damage. Noise pollution is no more only an urban problem because even in rural areas noise from heavy machinery from industries or factories and farm implements have added to the problem.

U.S. HISTORY Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
U.S. HISTORY - Essay Example He went to Paris in 1919 to shape the Treaty of Versailles, the peace treaty which ended the World War 1 (Wikipedia, 2006a). Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), started his career as a writer. Hemingwayââ¬â¢s first important work was ââ¬ËThe Sun Also Risesââ¬â¢ (1926). Similarly successful was ââ¬ËA Farewell to Armsââ¬â¢ (1929). Hemingway used his experiences as a reporter during the civil war in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, ââ¬ËFor Whom the Bell Tollsââ¬â¢ (1940). Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel, ââ¬ËThe Old Man and the Seaââ¬â¢ (1952), for which Ernest Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (1954) (The Nobel Foundation 1954). à Herbert Clark Hoover (1929-1933) was the 31st President of the United States. Within eight months of his induction, the stock market crashed, signifying the beginning of the Great depression, the most severe economic crisis the United States had ever known. The Great Depression was a stern test for Hoover and one that proved difficult to manage. World War I brought Hoover to importance in American politics and thrust him into the global attention (Presidency in History, 2003a). Eleanor Roosevelt was an active First Lady during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelts presidency. She traveled, visiting relief projects, surveying working and living conditions, and then reporting her observations to the President. She became a supporter of the rights and needs of the poor, and of the disadvantaged. Even after President Roosevelts death Mrs. Roosevelt continued public life. She was appointed to the United States Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly. She was chairman of the Human Rights Commission. The Gifted Children
Started in the 1970â⬠³s, Americaâ⬠s Gifted & Talented programs are used to enhance the curriculum of students included in either category in order to challenge and strengthen their unique abilities. These students are usually provided a separate class with specialized lessons in all areas and a teacher with a special degree in gifted education. I feel that it is important that the teacher was a gifted student who would know what the students must face as ââ¬Å"above averageâ⬠members of their school. The job market for gifted education offers a wide range of opportunity and gifted teachers are needed all over the One of the earliest programs for gifted and talented students was set up in 1974, at The Old Donation Center, in Virginia Beach. Students scoring within the top 3% of students on an assessment test are referred here to be further challenged. These students are considered gifted and have special teachers and classes to promote development of their talents and minds. Programs like this began to pop up around the nation in the 70â⬠³s; however, gifted students were looked down upon by teachers, parents, and peers. Many people considered them to be ââ¬Å"freaksâ⬠because they were different. They didnâ⬠t understand the implications of the terms ââ¬Å"giftedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"talentedâ⬠. Most people simply expected gifted students to act more mature or to be geniuses, even though gifted students are the same as other children in their needs as human beings. Some gifted students were forced to grow up too fast and some simply ignored the fact that they were smarter than others, thus, they were lost in the shuffle. The irony of it all is that gifted-ness seems to run in families and the children of these repressed gifted students are, themselves, But what exactly is a ââ¬Å"giftedâ⬠student? Students (elementary & secondary) are given a repertoire of tests. These tests check IQ, psychomotor ability, specific academic aptitude/talent, creative and productive thinking, leadership ability, and skills in the visual and performing arts. The main requirement, the IQ, is tested by a standardized IQ test (remember, however, that IQ tests are not always perfectly accurate). Ratings are given to each bracket of IQ scores: If a student receives a rating of ââ¬Å"giftedâ⬠or higher (130+), he/she is considered to be a gifted student and is introduced into the designated programs. These students are given the opportunity to choose classes that are meant to teach them how to use their minds for critical thinking, reasoning, and artistic pursuits. Students in these classes are also exposed to culture, literature, and other subject areas that are not usually covered in what they term ââ¬Å"normal classesâ⬠. The gifted classes are mainly in an open format allowing the student to create the parameters of his/her work and allowing them to be creative in their learning experience. Each class is presided-over by a teacher that has specialized degrees in gifted education. Almost every school in the United States has a need for a gifted class, making job opportunities endless; there are never Gifted teachers must have both a degree in education (secondary or elementary) and a degree in special education (gifted). These teachers are individuals that must have stamina, people skills, and open minds. It is also important (to the students) that the teacher himself/herself was also classified as gifted. It sets a common bond, shows them that the teacher understands the problems they face as so-called ââ¬Å"smart kidsâ⬠. These students are often ridiculed by heir peers and looked-down upon by their teachers. They are often separated from others their age by a barrier that can only be described as their ââ¬Å"intelligenceâ⬠. This is why, often, gifted teachers have degrees in administration, counseling, or psychology. All teachers that I interviewed told me that a continually upgraded education is a must (as are additional degrees). In order to keep up with the students one must attend seminars, workshops, special classes, etc. There is no end to the amount of education that could help you to understand gifted students and the role of their teacherâ⬠. Also, if a teacher has extra educational qualifications, he/she could be asked to step up to the position of administrator or, more often, counselor. This means pay raises. Though the average salary for teachers is approximately $27,500 per year, it is ââ¬Å"a worthwhile undertakingâ⬠according to Jane Mansueto, ââ¬Å"It is incredible to work with gifted students. They are incredible! â⬠She went on to remark that it is fascinating to imagine that they are of the same level of intelligence as the teacher and what they must be feeling inside. She feels that the students are not othered by what their peers think, but actually tend to understand that otherâ⬠s opinions mean little compared to their own. Mrs. Mansueto taught at Elm Grove Middle School for 5 years. She commented on her role as a gifted teacher to consist of ââ¬Å"one part mentorship, one part hardship, and one part friendshipâ⬠. When asked what kind of hours she keeps, she laughed and asked if she was supposed to have time off. According to Mrs. Mansueto, unlike a ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠teacher, a gifted teacher has no books to go by or preset material to teach, or, for that matter, a preset subject to teach. They are given a blank page and, using input from students, must draw up lessons from every subject area and constantly challenge the inquisitive minds of the gifted. Jane Mansueto attended Trinity College where she majored in both elementary education and gifted education. Her favorite part of being a gifted teacher is being with the students, working hand in hand with them to plan and carry out projects and trips. Though the pay is average, and there is not much room to be promoted if you wish to remain in the classroom, gifted teaching has its personal rewards. Jeff Simpleton, a gifted teacher as well as a former gifted student, states, ââ¬Å"I really think that by being gifted, I am in touch with what they have to go through. They know that I can understand. â⬠Mr. Simpletonâ⬠s class consists of 6 high school students, who have many problems due to the intelligence barrier and a kind of isolation that has built up over the years between themselves and their classmates. They seem to feel that they have a reputation that they must live up to. The students try to please everyoneâ⬠¦ they push themselves with sheer motivation and determination and drive. Mr. Simpleton feels that this is ââ¬Å"what makes them so greatâ⬠. He feels that anyone with a sense of adventure and a need for something new day after day would find teaching a gifted class to be the perfect job for Gifted teachers are important to the development of their students minds. They are understanding individuals who must work hard to make the curriculum interesting and challenging. With the proper education it is possible to go far as a teacher of the gifted. 5 Important Oedipus Rex Quotes Explained
Oedipus Rexà (Oedipus the King) is a famous play by the great ancient Greek tragedianà Sophocles. The play was first performed around 429 BCE and is part of a trilogy of plays which also include Antigone and Oedipus at Colonus. In a nutshell, the play tells the story of Oedipus, a man doomed from birth as a result of a prophecy which states that he will murder his father and marry his mother. Despite his familys attempts to stop the prophecy from being fulfilled, Oedipus still falls prey to fate. The simple plot of the play can be easily summed up in just five key quotes. Oedipus Rex has influenced artists and thinkers around the world for more than two millennia. Its the basis forà Sigmund Freuds psychoanalytical theory, appropriately named the Oedipus complex; as Freud notes of Oedipus in his seminal work The Interpretation of Dreams: His destiny moves us only because it might have been oursââ¬âbecause the oracle laid the same curse upon us before our birth as upon him. It is the fate of all of us, perhaps, to direct our first sexual impulse towards our mother and our first hatred and our first murderous wish against our father. Our dreams convince us that this is so. Setting the Scene Ah! my poor children, known, ah, known too well,The quest that brings you hither and your need.Ye sicken all, well wot I, yet my pain,How great soever yours, outtops it all. Oedipus exclaims these sympathetic words at the beginning of the play to the people of Thebes. The city is beset with a plague and many of Oedipuss citizens are sick and dying. These words paint Oedipus as a compassionate and empathetic ruler. This image, juxtaposed with Oedipuss dark and twisted past, revealed later in the play, makes his downfall even more striking. Greek audiences at the time were already familiar with the story of Oedipus; thus Sophocles skillfully added these lines for dramatic irony. Oedipus Reveals His Paranoia and Hubris The trusty Creon, my familiar friend,Hath lain in wait to oust me and subornedThis mountebank, this juggling charlatan,This tricksy beggar-priest, for gain aloneKeen-eyed, but in his proper art stone-blind.Say, sirrah, hast thou ever proved thyselfA prophet? When the riddling Sphinx was hereWhy hadst thou no deliverance for this folk? And yet the riddle was not to be solvedBy guess-work but required the prophets artWherein thou wast found lacking; neither birds nor sign from heaven helped thee, but I came. The simple Oedipus; I stopped her mouth. This speech by Oedipus reveals a lot about his personality. A clear contrast from the first quote, Oedipus tone here shows that he is paranoid, has a short temper, and is pompous. Whats happening is that Teiresias, a prophet, refuses to tell Oedipus who the murderer of King Laius (Oedipuss father) is. A bewildered Oedipus reacts by angrily taunting Teiresias for being stone-blind, a charlatan, a beggar-priest, and so on. He also accuses Creon, the person who brought Teiresias, for planning this perplexing scene in an attempt to undermine Oedipus. He then continues to belittle Teiresias by saying how useless the old prophet, as it was Oedipus who defeated the Sphinx who terrorized the city.à Teiresias Reveals the Truth Of the children, inmates of his home,He shall be proved the brother and the sire,Of her who bare him son and husband both,Co-partner, and assassin of his sire. Provoked by Oedipuss offensive words, Teiresias finally hints at the truth. He reveals that not only is Oedipus the murderer of Laius, but he is both brother and [father] to his children, both son and husband to his wife, and the assassin of his [father]. This is the first piece of information Oedipus gets in discovering how he unwittingly committed incest and patricide. A humbling lessonââ¬âSophocles shows how Oedipus hot temper and hubris provoked Teiresias and set his own downfall in motion. à Oedipus Tragic Downfall Dark, dark! The horror of darkness, like a shroud,Wraps me and bears me on through mist and cloud.Ah me, ah me! What spasms athwart me shoot,What pangs of agonizing memory? In a grotesque scene, Oedipus screams these lines after he blinds himself. At this point, Oedipus has realized that he indeed killed his father and slept with his mother. He is unable to cope with the truth after he has been blind to it for so long, and so symbolically blinds himself physically. Now, all Oedipus can see is darkness, like a shroud. The Conclusion of One Story and Beginning of the Next Though I cannot behold you, I must weepIn thinking of the evil days to come,The slights and wrongs that men will put upon you.Whereer ye go to feast or festival,No merrymaking will it proveà for you Oedipus utters these words to his daughters, Antigone and Ismene, at the end of the play before being cast out of the city. The introduction of these two characters foreshadows the plotà of another famous play by Sophocles, Antigone.
